How to keep your roof maintenance under control during autumn/winter weather

The autumn and winter months pose a growing challenge to commercial roof maintenance, both over the course of each year, and as weather patterns become more extreme in the longer term.

As the wetter weather of autumn sets in, roofs face their first test as any leaks that have gone unnoticed over the summer months are much more likely to become apparent.

Drainage is also an issue – including roof-edge guttering and drainpipes clogged by fallen leaves and other debris from the late summer.

Meanwhile as the winter weather arrives, there are even more complications, such as the risk of ice forming on roofs, heavy accumulations of snowfall, and freeze-thaw effects on pipes including drainage and water supplies alike.

All of this demands attention and with the risk of water damage when your roof leaks, it’s a case of the sooner the better.

The autumn of 2019 has already seen severe weather warnings and record-breaking hurricane activity heading eastwards over the Atlantic.

If you have any concerns at all about your roof fabric, or you simply haven’t carried out any routine roof maintenance recently, now is the time.

Solutions for weak or leaking roofs

Commercial roof repairs need to tick all the boxes, being fast, affordable, long-lasting and ideally causing the minimum of disruption to the premises.

For all of these purposes, a roof overlay system such as a cut to fall roof can be a good option, especially on roofs where the problems are caused by a lack of pitch.

Flat roofs naturally have less ability to disperse rainwater, as it does not naturally run off of a flat surface, especially if the roof has started to sag in places.

A cut to fall roof works by overlaying the existing roof with a watertight pitched layer, creating an angled top surface that controls rainwater run-off.

This can then be guided towards a particular gutter or drain, often laid along the centre of the roof rather than the edge, and the excess water is then drained away safely.

At hebs Group we can provide case studies of our past work in this area and have considerable expertise in ensuring roofs of all types are well maintained, waterproof and strong enough to withstand expected snowfall.

Together this helps to give you weatherproof premises for the coming autumn-winter season, allowing you to keep trading without any major and costly business interruptions whatever the weather.

We make it our priority to go the extra mile when it comes to building and facilities management, especially with hebs Flowtech – specialising in drainage and sewer maintenance for customers across the north, using innovative technologies and eco-friendly strategies for excellent results.
